Three apartment blocks at Rialto in Newcastle have officially reopened after being closed for two years due to fire safety concerns.
In June 2023, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service issued a prohibition notice for the entire development, which prompted a full evacuation. While some residents were allowed to return shortly afterwards, three blocks remained closed.
Following substantial remedial works carried out by the original developer, Persimmon, the Fire Service has now lifted the notice, and buildings are once again safe to occupy. A key improvement is the installation of new fire safety systems, including a full sprinkler system, which has allowed the Waking Watch to stand down.
As the managing agent for the development, Kingston played a central role in coordinating the evacuation on the night the notice was issued, remaining on site into the early hours to support residents. Kingston have continued to provide support while remedial measures have been undertaken and assisted with communication between all parties involved.
Although there is still work required to remediate the external cladding, the reopening of these blocks brings closure to a challenging chapter for Rialto leaseholders.
