A piece of local history has been preserved at a Kingston managed development, after a diseased 200-year-old beech tree at Liberty Green, Washington Village, was transformed into a wooden sculpture that is quickly becoming a community attraction.
When the health of the historic tree deteriorated, the Liberty Green Directors (and long-time volunteers for Washington Village in Bloom) were determined to preserve the tree rather than remove it completely.
A specialist sculptor was commissioned to transform the remaining trunk into a beautifully carved bald eagle. The carving took three days to complete, with the tree reshaped into a stunning public feature.
The bald eagle – the national bird and symbol of the USA – was chosen because of Washington Old Village’s historic connection to George Washington, whose family ancestry can be traced back to the area.
Since its completion, the finished sculpture has captured the attention of both residents and visitors, with people regularly stopping to admire the sculpture and take photographs.
Volunteers from Liberty Green have been repeatedly recognised for their success over the years in the Northumbria and Britain in Bloom competition. This latest project highlights the sense of pride residents take in their outdoor spaces.
